Distance Learning Courses - Educating Working Professionals

From ages ago the concept of school is there. Earlier students were taught combat techniques, horse riding, astrology and lot more. Gradually with time the need to learn increased. Research and analysis over thousands of subjects gave human beings new lessons to learn. Specialized courses, evaluation of study and a lot more came into the picture as years passed by. People learned a lot of different subjects and got more civilized day by day. On line education is the latest addition to the extended need of learning for human beings. Let us a dig a bit deep to find out how to opt for distance learning courses.

Most of you must have attended schools and colleges. We used to attend regular classes and then at some prefixed time we had to attend the exam for the evaluation of our study.
We got promoted to the new class based on our examination results. But as you start your battle in the professional world, gradually it gets difficult for you to learn anything by attending regular classes. Sometimes your profession also demands some extra knowledge but you find it difficult to manage time. Distance learning courses are here to rescue you from such situations. You can manage your office chores as well as satisfy your education needs, both at the same time.

The distance learning courses are quite easy to complete. First you need to get in touch with an institution that offers on line degree on the subject of your preference. Then you can affiliate yourself for that particular course by paying the requisite amount which for your information, is much less than a regular course. Once you have applied you can get access to the on line repository of the study materials or the organization can send you the study materials by post. Take your time and prepare for the degree. When you are ready go for the on line examination. You do not have to go anywhere for appearing in the exam. You can give the exam at the comfort of your home from your laptop. All you need is an Internet connection and you can be the proud possessor of the degree you wished for.

Applied Psychology is one of the most preferred among the distance learning courses. With a degree in applied psychology, you can have your own practice or can apply to different organizations as a Human Resource Manager. Distance learning course would not stop you from getting a good job in a reputed organization, if you do the course from a good institute. Hence it is very important that you do a background research on the reputation of the institute before enrolling in any of their courses. The Internet as always can help you in this too. Find out about the institute from its ex-students if you can manage that as they are the only ones who will give you the real scenario. So if you want to build your career in applied psychology but cannot manage the time, go for distance learning courses without any doubt.

Online College Courses - Is It for You?

Higher education has now tapped the power and accessibility of the internet to offer online college courses and this fact is being taken advantage of by more and more students nowadays. However, online college courses may not always fit everyone. Some students are more capable of learning when they work in a structured learning environment or independent learning is just something that is not the best fit for their lifestyle. If you are considering online college courses but not pretty sure if it is really for you, then here are some things that you might want to consider:

While online courses offer time flexibility, you should be able to understand that there are a few times that you have to be in front of the computer. You need to have the proper discipline to maintain a good academic standing and to finish your course work, assignments, research or any other requirements on time.

This is a huge challenge for people who have been so used to procrastinating things that they would have finished today but didn't. Remember, online courses require that you work around good time management skills in order for you to perform your job well as a student and as an employee or mother (whichever applies).

Since everything is done online, do not expect to meet your professor face to face at one point or another. Some students prefer that they have actual or personal interaction with their professors but there are students who can totally live without it. If you are pretty sure that you can live with this arrangement, then you can definitely survive online college courses.

There is also very little or no interaction with your fellow students or classmates.

Again, there are people who are more comfortable learning in their own room, wearing only their pyjamas while there are people who learn better when they are inside the classroom setting. You have to know which ones you prefer because with online courses, your classroom would be a chat room where you, your classmates and your professor can exchange ideas about reading assignments that are provided to you before the actual "meeting."

While online college courses are generally accepted by employers, you may experience a little difficulty if you plan to transfer your online course into a future program of study. Online college course credits may be a little harder to transfer than "traditional college credits" so if you are planning to transfer at some point, you need to check with your school if their credits can be transferred.

Why Online College Courses Are Better Than Your Local Campus

The thought of driving to a traditional college campus, paying to park, walking to a classroom and sitting there for hours on end waiting for the class to be over is enough to make most people give up on the dream of higher education. That kind of life is fine when you are young, but when you have a family or a job, it is impossible to pursue a degree in the traditional fashion. Online college courses are, by far, the best way to finally get the degree that you have always wanted and start making more money.

There are a wide variety of reasons why so many people are turning to online college courses, but for most of them it is simply the convenience. The ability to take a class whenever you want and wherever you are is much easier than going to a traditional college campus. You can also take classes quicker, at your own pace, and this makes getting on with your life easier, too.

If you think that you are too old or have been out of school for too long, nothing could be further from the truth! Many people all over the world, from all backgrounds and of all ages are taking online college courses as a way to improve their job prospects, to get the degree they always promised themselves they would get or just for their own personal satisfaction.

Even if you don't want to get a degree and just want to take a few classes, you can do that, too.

Online courses are one of the most valuable things that has come out of the Internet revolution, allowing people who would otherwise never continue their education the chance to improve their prospects, improve their financial security and get the education that they always wanted.

College Degrees - Beating the Required Courses Challenge

One of many obstacles you might find on your way to a college degree is the "Required Course" trap. These are the courses that your college forces you to complete prior to graduation. They are usually on the level of the Phys Ed courses you had to take in High School. In many cases, you will have already taken a similar or even higher level course earlier in your career.

In my case, the required course that was preventing my graduation with an Associate's degree was called "How to Use the Library." This course showed how to use the Dewey Decimal System (remember that?) to find resources and research material. Since I had already completed many higher level
courses that included research, footnotes, and resource attribution, I felt that this course was not to be of much use.

However, it was a "Required Course," and requests to waive the requirement were refused.

The course itself was simple; a two day lecture in the library, some simple assignments, and a paper. This course was always scheduled for a weekend. I signed up for the course, paid my 5.00 fee and was scheduled for the next session. My job at the time included a lot of short notice travel. So as fate would have it, when the course was scheduled, I had an emergency job. No problem, I was out 5.00, but I could re-schedule. That's when I found the trap. The course was only offered once per quarter. I scheduled and missed the course three times before I searched for another way to get this mandatory course out of the way.

I visited my friend at the local military base's Education Office. The Education Office was not affiliated with any particular university, so they provided unbiased opinions.

After I explained my dilemma to the counselor, he offered this suggestion.

"Transfer your credits from the University of Maryland to Regent's University of the State of New York. You will get full credit for the courses you have completed at University of Maryland, they are accredited, and you can get even more credits. They will accept some military schools you have attended that University of Maryland does not accept for credit."

This was great advice. I mailed off my application, sent a request to the University of Maryland to transfer my credits and waited for Regent's to respond. A few months later, I received my evaluation package from Regent's which showed my transfer credits and what I needed to complete my degree. I was able to complete these in a few more months and by September, 1996, I had my Associate's Degree.

Note that Regent's also had required courses, but the scheduling was much more flexible. This allowed me to take the courses when I had the time.

Conclusion: Look out for "Required Courses." All colleges have them and they can trip you up. Schedule and complete them as soon as possible to avoid that last minute rush that might delay degree completion.

Rn To Bsn College And Online Courses

In the United States there are several levels of qualification which nurses can obtain as they progress through their careers. Licensed Vocational Nurses (in CA, TX) or Licensed Practical Nurses (all other states) are the lowest level of qualification for a licensed nurse. Nursing assistants may operate who are not qualified to this level, but they are by definition unlicensed. RNs, or Registered Nurses, form the next tier in the structure. Most of these will hold either a diploma or associate degree in nursing, and all will have many hours of clinical experience. They will also have had to pass the state board's examinations, or NCLEX-RN, before they are awarded the license as a registered nurse. For many RNs the next level will be to gain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN). RN to BSN college conversion courses, or bridging courses, are available both online and in traditional campus locations for those who wish to upgrade their qualification to a BSN.

The typical route into a registered nursing position in the United States is through a nursing program granting the degree of Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN). These courses are college based for two or three years, and there is always a heavy emphasis on practical clinical skills and knowledge.

The older style hospital based training, leading to a Diploma in Nursing, is now quite rare in the US. In the United States nurses do not become licensed to operate until they pass the examination of the state nursing board.

For RN level this exam is known as NCLEX-RN. Most college degrees provide their own tests to ensure that their graduates are ready for the state board exams.

A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) will be the next career step for many RNs. This can be taken as a four year course, but as RNs will already have large amounts of clinical experience, and will have covered a lot of the material already during their Associate degree (ASN), there are a fair number of fast-track or bridging programs which allow registered nurses to gain a BSN in two years.

The BSN prepares the nurse for a number of possible career moves away from the bedside. For example, the holders of BSN degrees will find themselves eligible for posts in management and training. Coursework in the BSN degree includes topics such as nursing science and leadership, and nursing informatics.

It is not always necessary to relocate to a community with a nursing school to gain a BSN, as there are a number of distance learning options. RN to BSN college bridging courses can be taken both online or at a college campus. Many nurses will find the online study to be a good way to upgrade their qualification to BSN, as they can continue to work their regular job while studying.

A BSN degree, via an RN to BSN college or online course, may be most appropriate for those who aim to become a nurse practitioner, or to enter teaching. Those who aim ultimately to earn a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) have an additional choice, because they can take an RN to MSN course, bypassing the BSN qualification.

According to Michelle Melton, a data analyst for a Georgetown University study, as much as 61 percent of the middle class these days holds a college degree as compared with 26 percent in 1970. Melton recently provided this information to a reporter for Diamondbackonline, which is the University of Maryland's student newspaper. "It used to be that you could have a high school degree or be a high school dropout and be in the middle class," Melton was quoted in Diamondbackonline as saying. "That's increasingly no longer the case."

Bachelor degree students who want a return on their investment might consider areas where job growth is anticipated.

The Georgetown report, "Help Wanted: Projecting Jobs and Education Requirements through 2018," shows that jobs requiring bachelor degree minimums in the healthcare and technical fields, communications, the arts, education and the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subject areas are to be among the fastest growing occupations, with some openings as early as 2011. By 2018, the report notes, service-related jobs in the areas of information, government, education, finance, business and health care are to be available to students who maintain a certificate or an associate's degree at minimum.

In terms of majors that lead to well-paying careers, students might consider various engineering specialties.

Four of the five most highly paid majors for the class of 2010 were in the areas of petroleum, chemical, computer and electrical engineering, according to a National Association of Colleges and Employers 2010 Salary Survey. Civil engineers, on the other hand, are expected to see the largest employment increases into 2010-2011, while biomedical engineers should see the fastest employment growth into the next decade, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Studying nursing at colleges and universities might also provide job security, since the Bureau of Labor anticipates more than 1 million vacant positions between 2008 and 2018. Those with an interest in technology might consider Bureau of Labor forecasts that, on the whole, the professional, science and technical services sector is to contribute about 2.7 million jobs to the economy by 2018, in large part because of a demand for design and integration of sophistic networks and Internet and intranet sites. Management, scientific and technical consulting services, on the other hand, are expected to make up about 31 percent of the job growth in this area, the Bureau of Labor reports.

College graduates in general might expect to earn more money as the level of their degree increases, Bureau of Labor Statistics information shows. For example, workers with a bachelor's degree in 2009 earned more than ,000 per week compared to those with only a high school education, who earned a little over 0 weekly. However, there are certain occupations where certificate and associates degree holders earn more than the average bachelors degree worker, according to the Georgetown report.

Those who want to continue their education, but are concerned about scheduling might consider online degree programs. Distance learning participants through these programs might more easily schedule studies between work and family responsibilities, and they can save time and money associated with commuting. Many students also opt for hybrid programs that combine distance learning with classroom time.
